Remember Me
We remember loved ones who have passed away, but God remembers us in both this life and the next.
A few days ago, a group of us gathered at the graveside of a gentleman who was a “fixture” in the Elsmere community. Butch would walk to the local Wawa every morning, buy a cup of coffee, and sit on the benches near the Wawa or the bus stop and talk with a group of locals.
Everyone around Elsmere seemed to know Butch. He was hard to miss, as he was over six feet tall, and had rather long hair. And he was always walking. As we gathered to remember Butch, neighbors told stories of his unassuming kindness. One neighbor talked about how Butch “never asked for anything,” but how, without being asked he would shovel the sidewalks of neighbors when it snowed.
Sadly, Butch passed away in his home in December. He had no immediate family. But he will be missed.
Butch wasn’t famous, but it was clear to me that he will be remembered.
Yet, we are “remembered” on earth for only as long as there is someone still around that knew us. That’s a sobering thought, but it reminds me of Isaiah 49: 15-16 which says, “Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.”
Each one of us will one day be “remembered” by someone. But, praise God, we will be held in the mind and heart of our Creator God forever! We don’t have to leave this life to be “remembered!”
Death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”n Romans 8:38-39: “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
