Do As I Say, Not As I Do
Every Parent's (Lame) Excuse

would bet that you can remember those words as clearly as I can: “Do as I say, not as I do.” I remember my father saying them to me several times during my childhood. Unfortunately I also remember saying them to my children when they caught me doing something I’d told them not to do. If we’re honest, we’re all like that. Hypocrites. We all fail to do what we intend and even desire to do at times.

“Dear Children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. Our actions will show that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God. Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything.”

We know that we are to love others as God loves us, but not one of us does that all the time. We're all guilty of saying one thing and doing another. Therefore, we must trust in God’s love through Jesus, who gave himself as the sacrifice and penalty for our failure to genuinely and truthfully love others.

As we trust in him, we lean on him. We follow him because we trust him. We trust his word. We trust his teaching, and we do it. Then we can love others as God loves us and them. Our whole world is changed. God’s love is greater!

Let’s meet this weekend at Christ the Cornerstone. Be sure to scroll down to see ways you can live your faith as we Love, Serve, and Engage the world with good news about Jesus!

Our Great Loving Heavenly Father: First we thank you for having such great love for us that no matter what we do, you still love us. Secondly, thank you for forgiving us through Jesus' suffering on the cross. We confess our continuing need for you. Come and fill us with your Holy Presence so that we can keep our words and actions in line with your plan for us to love you with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Amen.
