A Christmas Without Strife
Can it be?

Growing up on the farm, we heated our home with two wood stoves. We gathered wood for fuel from the acres of wooded lands on our farm. I hated getting wood.   It was wet, cold, dangerous and hard work because we only cut wood in the winter as we needed it. We were too busy in the summer with other work. Dad tried to encourage me by telling me (all too often) that I should be grateful because gathering wood warmed me three times:

First we cut down and split the wood.
Then we hauled and stacked it in the basement.
Finally, we burned it in the fire making the whole house toasty-warm but only after a lot of striving.

Dad’s positive view of the hard work never really satisfied me. I was never content to heat with wood, but I am grateful to have a father who taught and expected me to work. I’m a wealthy man because of him.

"True godliness with contentment is itself great wealth." 1 Timothy 6:6 (New Living Translation)

Contentment can be a difficult thing to grasp and keep. A simple definition of contentment is "the absence of strife." Holiday seasons seem to be filled with opportunities for strife. Can we have a Christmas without strife? Yes, but it still may be busy and we still may have difficult things to do. However, the miracle of Christmas is that God is with us through it all, giving us joy, hope, peace, and love even as we endure difficult and sometimes sad moments.

As we approach Christmas, I’m praying that you will experience contentment in your life. We have that by our friendship with God through Jesus. So I invite you to meet with us this weekend to explore how.

Now is a great time to invite a friend, neighbor, family member and work colleague to worship. Let’s celebrate and experience all God’s promises together at CtC Bear and Elsmere campuses. We’ll have a Winter of Contentment and peace in Christ.
