Saying "No" Helps Set Our Priorities
It's OK to Say "No"
I had a conversation with another church member this weekend about learning how to say “no” when someone has a request that puts an unreasonable strain on our personal time and resources. My friend was trying desperately to fill a gap that had been left when someone else didn’t follow through on a project.
Our Scripture for this weekend talks about how the apostles in the early church were in that very situation. They were desperately trying to serve the people around them, and still be strong spiritual leaders. They fell under criticism because their food distribution program wasn’t reaching enough people (whatever “enough” is).
In Acts 6: 2-4 it says: So, the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program. 3 And so, brothers, select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will give them this responsibility. 4 Then we apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the word. “
They delegated the responsibility of their food ministry to others so that they could spend more time praying and teaching---both of which were their called positions.
To what is the Lord calling you? What is preventing you from saying, “Yes?” It’s ok to say “no” to people and activities that prevent us from giving our full “Yes” to God,
I’d like to finish with this prayer for you: Thank you, Lord God, for calling us. Give us the strength and wisdom to know how to focus on what the most important task of all—serving you and telling all those we meet about your grace and love. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
I hope you will join us this weekend, either online at ctcde.online.church at 9 or 11AM on Sunday, or in person in Bear at 6PM Saturday or 9AM or 11 AM Sunday or at 11 AM Sunday at Elsmere.
