He Faced Pain Majestically
And Strengthens Us To Do the Same
Palm Sunday, April 10, marks the beginning of Holy Week. It begins with the joyous celebration of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey. The crowd waved palm branches and spread their cloaks in front of him. That’s how they honored royalty, and they shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” However, by the end of the week, this same crowd who cheered turned on Jesus and screamed for his crucifixion.
As a youngster I remember Holy Week starting at church with a big procession, palms waving, and wonderful worship service with beautiful music! I particularly remember this hymn:
Ride on, ride on in majesty!
Hark! All the tribes Hosanna cry.
O Savior meek, pursue your road,
with palms and scattered garments strowed.
To me, the choir sang as if they were the crowd on the road welcoming Jesus into Jerusalem! Then the tempo changes and the final verse is,
Ride on, ride on in majesty!
In lowly pomp ride on to die.
Bow your meek head to mortal pain,
then take, O God, your pow'r and reign.
As we Palm Sunday and Holy Week, let us remember the importance of this time in history, the real meaning – the victory Jesus would bring over death and the grave. He is our savior and hope of eternal life. ”Ride On! Ride on in majesty!”
What are you facing today that calls you to trust God courageously? I’d love to hear about it and we’ll pray for you at CtC.
