Tag! You're It!
Be Prepared

I love celebrations, especially birthday parties. Many years ago my family and I were planning a big 100th birthday party for my great grandmother Viola. At the planning meeting, the family decided we would invite all our family and friend and sing her favorite hymns. Of course we planned to have entertainment and her favorite foods, but we still had one part to work on, and that was the speakers. We had invited the mayor and some other “dignitaries," but we needed people from the family to speak also. My Aunt Nita decided she and my mother would figure out the rest and the rest of the team could go on with their day.

Later in the week my Aunt called. My mother put the call on speaker-phone and together they declared, "Tag, you're it!" I didn’t know what they were talking about, but it wasn't some game. They giggled for a moment and explained that I was the chosen one to speak at my great grandmother’s party. Needless to say, I was not expecting it nor was I especially thrilled; but I knew I was the best choice for this occasion. After all, she was my great grandmother. She named me. I was used to speaking publicly and my family needed me (I thought to myself). Of course I would do it.

Sometimes we don’t always volunteer on our own to do things. In my case I was “tagged it” or selected; but my family knew I could do it. The disciples did something similar when they selected Matthias to replace Judas. Among the men who followed Jesus, the disciples narrowed it down to two. To make the final choice the Bible says in Acts 1:29, “Then they cast lots, and Matthias was selected to become an apostle with the other eleven.” Tag, Matthias was “it."

When I look back I am happy I was selected. I was able to contribute and help my grandmother’s special day be a memorable occasion, which we often talk about and reflect on. Everyone played a role. In my family we all have our own special talents or gifts, as I am sure is true of your family. I am glad I was able to do my part. We all can do our part. We are all given special gifts and abilities to be used at work, home and at church. So let’s all get together to praise God, help one another and spread God’s word. Tag your it!

I look forward to seeing you this weekend. Below are several ways you might use your abilities and gifts to serve God and others.

Director of Children and Family’s Ministry

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gifts you have given to us. We thank you for those of us who recognize our own gifts and are willing to use them for Your glory. Please help us recognize the gifts in others so we can be bold enough to say “tag your it." Forgive us for the times we haven’t used the talents you have given us. Fill us with your Holy Spirit, so that we can boldly use those gifts to spread your good news, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

We are here to love God and all people so that all people may experience the

life-changing love of Jesus!

LOVE - We meet every weekend to experience God's love for us and show His love for others.

SERVE- We use our abilities, talents, skills, and passions for the good of others.

ENGAGE - We engage with friends to care for one another and to make new friends so they may experience God's kindness too.
