Do You Know How to Pray?
Jesus, teach us to pray.
Why Pray?
Because just like a baby is created to bond with mom, dad, brother, sister, and friends, we all are created to have a strong, life-giving, and life-sustaining relationship with God. He is our Heavenly Father and like no parent or friend on earth. His love and justice endure forever. Prayer is how we talk with him.
How Can we pray? Here’s a very simple pattern to follow to P.R.A.Y.
- Pause. Slow down. Stop. Take a breath. Look, listen, and see that God is powerful, loving, and good. You don’t have to speak yet. Just quiet yourself in God’s presence. Let God place a few thoughts in your mind.
- Rejoice. Now think and tell God "thanks" for whatever you are sensing. It doesn’t have to be profound. What are you grateful for? You could thank God for the building you’re in, or the rocks on the ground. Just give God some praise.
- Ask. Now ask God what is on your heart. Are you anxious? Ask him to calm your heart and mind. Hurt? Ask for healing. Someone else needs help? Ask God to supply their needs.
- Yield. Give God the opportunity to lead you. Be willing to follow God and tell him so. Let him go first and commit to follow him.
Jesus is God who became a man. He gave his life on the cross to overcome the consequences of sin, which is eternal death and separation from God. When we connect with God through our trust in Jesus, we experience God.
Jesus meets us in prayer and we can trust him with our lives. So let's
Pause
Rejoice
Ask
Yield
Let’s meet together this weekend so we can encourage each other to follow Jesus.
Heavenly Father, I pause. [Pause for dramatic--and prayerful--effect!] Even for just a moment.
I sense your powerful presence, and I thank you that you are here. Now. Give the reader of this prayer your presence and peace. I let you lead my life all for the sake and glory of Jesus, the savior of the world. Amen
