We All Have Something to Learn...
Whiskers and Paws
I recently helped a friend rescue a litter of four kittens. That’s right four. Right now, the kittens are in my home, pending initial visits to the veterinarian. They are so much fun to watch…. four little whiskered faces and 16 little paws come running up to the door of their enclosure whenever they hear me coming. While they are with me, I am teaching them some basic kitten manners. Living indoors is quite different than living outdoors for a cat, so they needed to learn how to use a litter box, how to eat solid food and how to clean themselves.
People who are parents understand that teaching basic life skills to your children is your responsibility. If you were not around, the children would still have to learn those skills somehow. Many people don’t realize that baby animals are not born with all the knowledge and skills they need to survive. They, too, have to be taught. Whether we are born with fingers and toes or whiskers and paws, we have to learn from someone else.
Our spiritual walk is like that also. Paul, in his letter to the Hebrews says, “You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food.” (Hebrews 5:12) When we were new to our faith, we needed patient teachers and mentors to teach us the Good News. As we mature in our faith, we become the teachers.
Who can you nurture in their faith? Can you think of anyone that you can walk beside and help them grow in their relationship with Christ?
