What's for Dinner?
We share cooking responsibilities at my home, which includes four adults. None of us likes to cook all the time. We groan when anyone asks, What’s for dinner? I usually answer by asking, What are you hungry for? Cooking is much easier when you’re hungry.
I enjoy pizza (btw pizza does not include pineapple). I like it so much that I work to control my portions or I will eat far more than I need. It’s just one of those foods that satisfies me.
Jesus said “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be filled.” That is great news. Think of the many injustices we experience in our world: abusive treatment of many kinds, poverty, homelessness, prejudice that causes all kinds of “-isms” and turns us into many kinds of “-ists.” Racism and sexism leads to racists and sexists. And just today I learned of the passing of a longtime and beloved brother in Christ. Ultimately death is the greatest injustice to life. We were created to live an abundant life.
The desire for justice is part of being human. Think also of this: If we are created in the image of God and we as humans desire justice, then God also desires justice. God is the one who brings justice and will bring justice to all people because he promises us the blessing of justice for those who desire it. And we rejoice that through Jesus, we inherit abundant life here and now that lasts for all eternity.
This weekend we’ll unpack some more ideas about experiencing God’s blessing of justice. For now, let me just remind you that God has set a feast of blessing for those who hunger and thirst for just. They will be filled up with it!
Here are some ways you can bring God's justice to our world:

Life-giving God, you created us like you to hunger for righteousness and justice, but we have failed to be all that you are. Forgive us for our selfishness and failure to treat others rightly and justly. Sometimes we get it right. Sometimes we fall miserably. We need your help. We commit ourselves to your ways, which are right and just. Give us your power to live as you want us to live in Jesus’ name. Amen.
