Don't Miss This Bus!
Are You Ready and Watching?
I switched on the flashing amber lights of the school bus as I approached the end of Johnny’s drive way. The brakes squealed, the bus stopped, and I opened the door to let him on as the red lights flashed to stop traffic. But Johnny was not standing at his usual spot. I looked up his long driveway toward his house up at the farm. That's when I saw a porch door swing open and Johnny ran out.
He was about ten years old and had not yet hit the age when his hormones would slim down his rounded little-boy body into that of a young man. He wasn’t quite in shape to run frantically down his quarter-mile driveway to catch the bus, but I admired his determination!
Something had caused him to miss the bus--almost. Sweat ran down his red-hot cheeks as he huffed and puffed to catch his breath. A few minutes after Johnny pounced into his seat, I heard other children scream “Eeeewww! Johnny threw up!” He had pushed himself so hard running that he over-heated and got sick. I wish Johnny had slowed down. I would have waited for him and that would have been much better than cleaning up a mess.
Some things just can’t be missed—like busses. Jesus spoke of a wedding party waiting for everything to get ready. He said some of the guests were prepared, and others were not. The prepared guests were welcomed into the party, but the others missed their opportunity. You can read the parable in Matthew 25:1-13
That comparison sounds harsh, but sometimes the truth is hard to hear. Jesus has forgiven the sin and wrongdoings of very person. But to "get on that bus," we have to trust Jesus is who he is and did what he came to do. At Christ the Cornerstone, we tell that good message--Jesus wants everyone to be ready so that when we returns, we all will rejoice with him in Heaven. I pray that you will always be ready by trusting in Jesus. If you're not sure, I'm willing to pray with you.
