How to Win by Giving Up
Real Life Requires Death
You won’t believe it until you do it. And when you do it, you’ll discover the truth and the power of it. What is it? Conscious surrender.
To win in sports, for example, athletes must learn to surrender. Consider what every elite athlete (which you know I am not!) must learn to surrender to:
- The alarm clock, for early morning workouts and when it’s time to sleep.
- The coach, who will quit if the athlete does not follow the coach’s instructions and teaching
- Pain, because pain is a natural and necessary experience to grow and improve strength and skill
- Fear, so that the athlete can do things they thought they could not do
- Fans, so that the noise from the bleachers brings encouragement instead of distraction
If you’re an athlete, you may think of even more times when giving up control to other people or forces brings growth, opportunity, and success.
Now let’s apply the truth of surrender to all of life, especially spiritually. After all, surrender is a spiritual activity.
Jesus said, “If you cling to your life, you will lose it, and if you let your life go, you will save it.” (Luke 17:33) Surrender is a skill that we must learn if we are to experience the fullness of life now and forever.
Surrendering to Jesus is far more than just winning a game or a trophy. It’s winning life that begins now and lasts forever.
I urge to find new life by surrendering to Jesus and follow his coaching, his instruction, and his guidance. You’ll be amazed what changes in your life. You will win life forever.
Dear Jesus, the idea of giving up control of my life seems unreasonable. How can dying lead to life? The only way to find out is to trust you. Jesus, we believe. Help our unbelief. Amen
