Peace is won with blood, sweat, and tears
Peace! with Towels
Years ago, when people actually wrote letters, a friend of mine would always end with the phrase “Peace and Towels.” One day, I asked him why he used that closing. “Jesus teaches us to work for peace by serving others.”
Today is the day we remember Jesus saying, “Since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet.”
Really? We don’t wash other people’s feet. Especially in this day of crazy viruses. Clearly Jesus is teaching us to serve one another in the most humble ways. That’s not easy. It takes courage and love to wash someone’s feet. When you’re finished, you will remember whose feet you washed or who washed your feet. Washing someone’s feet creates an intimate bond with that person. I think that’s exactly why Jesus did it.
Jesus wants to be an intimate friend of us all. A great friendship is full of peace. And many times that takes blood, sweat, and tears, all of which Jesus literally gave so that you and I can have peace with God.
Nothing is too “smelly” or “dirty” for Jesus to cleanse. Nothing. Nothing will cause Jesus to run away from us. Nothing would cause Jesus to say to us, “You’re too filthy! Get away!” Jesus loves you including all the hidden parts you think no one else knows about. And Jesus died on the cross to forgive all of our wrong-doings which separate from God forever. Because of Jesus’ forgiveness, we are given the promise of new and everlasting life with God. That brings great freedom, joy, and peace to those who choose to believe it. I hope you are one of those people. I am.
Jesus served us ultimately through his death on the cross and brought peace between us and God. Jesus commands us to love others by serving them in His name. As we serve them, we will work for peace among us. Who can you serve today, in Jesus’ name, and work for peace?

Heavenly Father, God of us all, thank you for caring for us. Sometimes we forget. Some people don’t know that you do care. We cast our worries and cares on you so that we can turn and love others as you love us. Fill us with your Holy Spirit as we follow you. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
