The cares and distractions of this world can easily overshadow...
Worldly Bamboo

It is nearly impossible for me to get anything to grow in my backyard. Years ago, someone who lived in the house planted bamboo in the backyard. No matter what remedies I try, the bamboo keeps returning and it seems that each time, it returns with a vengeance. Part of the problem is that I didn’t address the problem early….and truthfully, I wasn’t very diligent with keeping the bamboo restricted. So now, the root system is established, and I will have to totally obliterate the bamboo infestation if I have any hope of having a usable backyard. Our hearts and minds can be like that backyard soil. If I allow worldly concerns to take over my mind and heart, there will be no room for the will of God and the Holy Spirit. Anything Jesus plants will be choked out if the things of this world have established themselves.

For me, it’s helpful to take a spiritual inventory from time to time. I try to get rid of any distractions that are influencing my thoughts and behavior in ways that are not pleasing to God. Sometimes it can be as simple as clearing some time in my day to spend in the presence of God.
Allowing God full access to my thoughts and feelings is a way to invite God to plant in me that which should be growing. So read God’s word. Listen to the teachings of Jesus. Follow what Jesus asks of us in Scripture. God seeds will grow in us if we keep our hearts ready for God’s planting. And God will use us to plant the seeds of the Gospel in others.
