His real name is Joseph, but friends called him Barnabas because he was a generous, faithful friend, and a great encourager. The Bible talks about him: "There was Joseph, who the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means "Son of Encouragement"). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the Island of Cyprus. He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles." Acts 4:32-37
 
I have always been a lover of crafts. Sewing, knitting, embroidery, wreath making, jewelry making, and the list goes on. On a visit to the home of one of my best friends I discovered what was going to be my lifetime absolute favorite craft: miniature dollhouses. 
 
Since that visit back in the early 80's I have become a "miniaturist.” I build dollhouses from kits, make dioramas and room boxes. I create miniature hats, miniature food, and teach young people the art of miniatures. Miniatures and dollhouses have become and remain my passion. After numerous trips to a local dollhouse shop I became friends with the owner, Alice. I never stopped to pick up just one item from her store. Instead, I'd spend the entire day talking with Alice, learning, having lunch, browsing through the shop, sitting on the floor looking through miniature magazines and how-to's, and even offering a bit of advice (from my limited experience) to customers. Alice was more than happy to spend time with me and to share her lifetime passion. One day, Alice complained that she was up to her ears in dollhouse assembly and repair or restoration requests. She showed me her workroom. Wow! I was like a kid in a toy store! Dozens of dollhouses in various stages of completion! Then Alice asked me if I would be interested in helping her. I thought she was joking. She wasn't. Alice admired my passion for miniatures, and the projects I had created on my own. She encouraged, supported, and became my mentor. She wanted me to excel in the world of miniatures, and I wanted the same thing. I'm still learning and enjoying the journey! Alice believed in me. Alice encouraged me.

I would never nickname Alice “Barnabus,” but just like him, God wants us to be sacrificial and generous givers. He wants us to invest in others to build relationships with them so they can become all God created them to be and to encourage and mentor them especially in the way Jesus wants us to go. I hope you’ll find ways to serve others through encouraging them.
