How can we take the first step to sharing Jesus?
Get Off the Chair!
The first time I went skiing, I was really scared. I was so scared, in fact, that I did not get off the chair lift. It was very embarrassing. The staff at the ski resort had to stop the lift and help me off. (I didn’t know you weren’t allowed to ride back down!). When the lift got to the top of the slope, where we were supposed to launch, I simply panicked. I didn’t know what awaited me on the slope.
In some ways, the church is li the ski lift. Like the ski lift, the church isn’t a place meant for us to stay in the seat and enjoy the ride. Rather, the church is the launching platform for us to go out into the world and do ministry. And our primary ministry is to make sure that everyone hears the message found in Romans 5:6-8:
When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
We are called by our baptism to be ministers to one another and to all. Pray for God to show you how to share the Good News with someone in your life, and how we all can be better equipped to get out of the seat and face the slope of ministry outside.
I’d like to finish with this prayer for you: Thank you, Lord God, for calling us to share Jesus with others. Bring joy to those hearing this message today and to their homes and families. Bring into our lives the people with whom you would have us share the good news of Jesus and give us the opportunities and the courage to do so. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
